What you need to know about emergency dentistryWho likes going to the dentist? I didn't see many hands going up! Technology has made dental procedures more comfortable and not quite so painful as some of us older folks remember as children visiting the dentist's office. Nonetheless, the need for emergency dentistry is bound to pop up sooner or later and you need to find a good dentist. Kids can fall off their bike and crack a tooth. An old filling comes out and you've got an exposed root that you feel immediately, to your great distress. You want to be prepared to deal with a tooth that's screaming for relief at midnight, when the dentist's office is closed. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with the emergency dentistry situation, no matter the time of day or night.
Find a good dentistAlways keep a vial of oil of cloves in your medicine cabinet. Should you wake up in the wee hours with a terrible pain in a tooth, your vial of oil of cloves will provide immediate relief. With a cotton swab, apply a drop or two of the clove oils to the base of the tooth. Cloves helps deaden the pain and is also antiseptic. This treatment will see you through 'til morning when the dentist opens. In the case of an abscess developing, you'll need a fresh clove of garlic in your cupboard at all times. When the abscess starts to hurt, cut a couple of thin slices of fresh garlic and position it along the gums of that tooth. Garlic is an effective natural antibiotic, which will help reduce the inflammation, as well as the pain. This remedy may reduce the implications and severity of the procedures the dentist may use in emergency dentistry.
Emergency dental clinicIf you have dental insurance, check before you need to know to determine what policies and procedures your insurer follows. For example, your insurance may only cover emergency procedures and may not pay for a root canal or other procedure that will save the tooth. Limited insurance policies may only pay for the extraction of the tooth. If you have a policy like this and want to save the tooth, the cost will be paid out of your own pocket. Discuss the situation with your dentist or if you need to find a good dentist ask for a recommendation, prior to needing emergency dentistry. Ask if they have a payment program, or sliding fee scale. It's much better to know up front what you might be looking at, rather than being surprised in addition to being in pain!
Being well prepared for a dental emergency may radically change the outcome. Do be sure to get that checkup every 6 months, so you might more readily avoid such painful emergency dentistry.! |
